And here it is: the master of overshadowing. Yellow Diamond herself, with the added bonus of a Pearl who doesn’t care because she doesn’t have to—she’s with the homeworld.
While in the first viewing it’s not immediately obvious what Peridot’s plan is (though Peridot’s redemption is still pretty likely even if you hadn’t seen the preview for Log Date 7 15 2), there are enough clues in her dialogue for her it to be clear that she was siding with Earth even at the start of the episode. Poor Peridot just wanted more episodes of Camp Pining Hearts, and Yellow Diamond simply wasn’t having any of it.
It was great seeing Amethyst have a moment just like one Jake from Adventure Time might have: being too mad to be able to come up with a mean nickname for Peridot. Pearl also did a great job at missing the point when she told Steven he could feed bad all he wanted back at the temple. Comedy gold, as always.
Of course, even if this was just the episode that finally confirmed that we’d be getting Peridot joining the team, it would be plenty great. That we got so much else too is just spoiling us.
Again, seeing Yellow Diamond was impressive. She’s a very business-oriented leader, not the mystical, distant ruler that Blue Diamond seemed to be.
Finally, a fun fact to just take note of: the moon base’s top room had blue glass, and we know that Earth was ruled (in the end, anyway) by Blue Diamond. The base Yellow Diamond was in during her call with Peridot had pink glass. Interesting, isn’t it?

GC13 and Hunter discuss another old favorite episode: Secret Team (definitely another episode worthy of a gold star).
A fun episode showing how Amethyst, Steven, and Garnet used to be earlier in the series (less responsible, less mature, and less warm, respectively), Secret Team is a great episode to watch if you want to appreciate some character development. Imagine post-Reformed Amethyst being so concerned with “busting” Pearl.
Of course poor Pearl was also willing to scold Steven as he threw himself under the bus (something a lot of fans took her to task for). She’s always had the willingness to be deceptive (even if apparently she’s not the best at it), hasn’t she?
All times are EDT.
Right now the schedules are looking conflicted, with some saying Steven Universe will air at noon. Right now the best guess is that it will air at the same time it’s been airing though, so that’s what it’s listed as.
Sunday:
6:00 PM: The Answer
6:15 PM: Cry For Help
6:30 PM: Marble Madness
6:45 PM: Winter Forecast
7:00 PM: Love Letters
7:15 PM: Say Uncle
7:30 PM: It Could’ve Been Great
7:45 PM: Message Received
The ending of House Guest is quite difficult to interpret: Steven tries to repair the Geode with his healing saliva, and despite his regained confidence he fails. However there is no need to fear, as Greg quickly saves the day with a complex human tool: high-quality duct tape!
It shouldn’t be hard to understand why this explanation is a little hard to take at face value: the Geode is an enormous structure of hard stone which is containing an incredibly powerful force, and while that force is enough to widen the crack in the stone as Greg and Steven watch the duct tape is apparently enough to not just stop the growth of the crack but also contain the storm (which had been leaking into the surrounding area.)
The duct tape sparkled on Steven’s night stand, but then so did Greg’s van after Pearl fixed it—and she was giving a list of very mundane repairs she had done to it. That makes it a bit tough to be sure that the sparkles represented some kind of magical property being transferred to the duct tape, from Steven’s spit or from the sheer power of Greg’s belief (and what little hair he has left).
This mystery might never be solved. If it is, maybe we’ll learn where Steven’s healing powers went… But that’s a mystery for another week.
How many exciting things can you pack into one episode? A secret Diamond base? A trip to the moon? Pictures of the Diamonds? A look at the initial Gem plans for Earth? An angry Garnet, combined with Peridot intrigue? It Could’ve Been Great was, itself, great!
Just the orb that White Diamond was depicted as holding, and apparently stored in a room in the base, would be enough speculation fuel for one episode. In addition to that though, we got good looks at three of the four Diamond portraits. Can you guess whose portrait was barely shown? Of course: Pink Diamond. You can’t hide forever, Pink Diamond! (Speaking of Pink Diamond: “We are literally walking in the footsteps of the Diamonds!” she said as she followed behind Steven.)
Of course Peridot’s matter-of-fact statement about Gems being designed to conquer planetoids was also interesting. We haven’t seen any new episodes since we pondered whether the Diamonds are, in fact, designers of the other Gems, so obviously we don’t have a good perspective on that yet. Still, at the time, it was great to finally have confirmation that the Gems are designed beings.
The ending to It Could’ve Been Great was quite satisfying—if the show had been airing weekly, waiting a week to see what Peridot was going to do with the device she took from the command chair wouldn’t have been too agonizing. We definitely had plenty to geek out over (including some pictures of apparently unseen Gem structures on Earth), but… Well next week we’ll cover it, but we have no complaints about how quickly we got that scheme resolved.
The Answer was partially overshadowed by It Could’ve Been Great, but both were overshadowed by the episode that came next: Message Received. That doesn’t make this episode any less impressive to re-watch though.

GC13 and Sophia discuss another favorite: Space Race.
Everybody loves Pearl, and this was a really good Pearl episode: there was so much emotion, it showed off Pearl’s qualities and her flaws so well, and she was reminded of how much she appreciates Steven.
Just in case Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem left any doubt about whether Gems were from space, Space Race definitely settled the question. That’s enough to give it some nice lore points (so thanks again to Pearl, this time for the exposition).
Finally, one more accolade for Pearl: she is a very good mechanic. So what if her ship couldn’t leave Earth? She built it in one day. Very impressive.

This is a mystery that was finally officially answered quite some time ago (a year ago exactly, allowing for it being a leap year this year) when Jailbreak aired. We met Ruby and Sapphire, then they fused together to form Garnet again. Though it’s obviously not timely, we’ve chosen it as our first Answer because it was the perfect mystery: so many hints were dropped over the course of the season, allowing large amounts of fans to be sure of Garnet’s fusion status well before the answer was ever given.
So what were these hints? There was one really, really big one: like Opal, who was the first fusion we saw, Garnet had two gems with different cuts but the same color. On the temple door, however, there were two gems with the same cuts as Garnet’s gems but with different colors. You could clearly see the details when she opened the door in Together Breakfast, so this piece of the puzzle was actually put in the show before we could even guess there might be a puzzle to solve (which Giant Woman took care of by introducing us to fusion).
This was enough to start fan speculation about Garnet’s status as a fusion almost immediately after Giant Woman aired. Not only did she have the two gems with the same color, and not only did the temple door imply that they should be different colors, but just like Opal, Garnet is a very strong Gem. Whenever there was a monster to fight Garnet was always the one doing the heavy lifting (she was even the only effective fighter in Arcade Mania), and Opal did the same thing: absolutely dominated a fight where Amethyst and Pearl were helpless.
There were, of course, a bunch of other smaller hints. They’re a bit subtle as foreshadowing, but they did create an intriguing web of coincidences that seemed quite unlikely were Garnet not actually a fusion:
Heck, Garnet even gets two shooting stars in the sky at her point in the theme song! It’s like they were winking at us every time the show started.
Of course even with all of this there were plenty of people who didn’t believe Garnet was a fusion. The examples of Amethyst, Pearl, Rose Quartz, Lapis Lazuli, and Peridot seemed to indicate that a Gem’s gem should be placed on the line of vertical symmetry. While we would, much later when The Answer aired, find out that different Gems of the same type can have their gems placed different places, at the time it was a missing piece of information.
Still, as far as fan theories go, Garnet fusion theory was rock solid (no pun intended). There was some strong evidence in its favor, lots of narrative choices that only made sense if she was a fusion, and only minor stumbling blocks in its way. They won’t all be so straight-forward, so we should look back and appreciate what we once had.
They sure took their time telling us how old Steven was: thirteen for most of the series, until he turned fourteen in Steven’s Birthday. Perhaps they wanted us to be as surprised as Connie was. The only surprise worth noting, however, is how dapper Steven can be (he and Connie are perfect friends).
This was Steven’s first proper use of shapeshifting, we think. Amethyst seemed to recognize it as normal shapeshifting, rather than a whimsically fluctuating age. Assuming it was, in fact, normal shape changing, we’re definitely looking forward to him moving closer to mastery of that power in the future. (Whatever he did, maybe he can use it to get his first beard hair back from Mabel.)
While the episode raised the concern that Steven might be stuck as a child forever, that beard hair was apparently used to indicate that he can, in fact, still grow. The Crystal Gems certainly recognized (and remarked upon) his growth over the past year—as a member of the team, no doubt. He’s much more mature than he was at the beginning of the series, and can handle himself around danger now.
You know how we mentioned the perfect friendship between Connie and Steven, though? While it was so perfectly illustrated by their totally spontaneous greeting where they managed to be perfectly in sync with one another despite how off the wall the whole thing was (they managed to say “clink” at the same time, for crying out loud), they both found ways to step up their game later in the episode. Steven, picking up on Connie’s clear initial concerns, worried that him staying physically young would be bad for Connie; after the crisis happened though, Connie came through for Steven—when it came down to it, her friendship with Steven was too important to let even a magical mishap get in the way. It’s really quite sweet.
Not all of the attention was on Steven and Connie this episode though: Steven’s Birthday gave a good peek at Amethyst’s and Pearl’s improved relationship, with them happily dancing together (in a style that seems to have enough energy for Amethyst and decorum for Pearl). Of course later, in Log Date 7 15 2, we’ll see Amethyst and Pearl easily fusing to form Opal. Hold on to that hopal, everybody, that we’ll be seeing more Opal this season!
