Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 79: Secret Team

PodcastTitleGC13 and Hunter discuss another old favorite episode: Secret Team (definitely another episode worthy of a gold star).

A fun episode showing how Amethyst, Steven, and Garnet used to be earlier in the series (less responsible, less mature, and less warm, respectively), Secret Team is a great episode to watch if you want to appreciate some character development. Imagine post-Reformed Amethyst being so concerned with “busting” Pearl.

Of course poor Pearl was also willing to scold Steven as he threw himself under the bus (something a lot of fans took her to task for). She’s always had the willingness to be deceptive (even if apparently she’s not the best at it), hasn’t she?

This is actually one of my less favorite episodes. Pearl and Amethyst try to sell out Steven, Garnet shows far more shapeshifting aptitude than we’ve seen before or since, and they generally felt somewhat out of character, except Steven. And as was pointed out the others being terrified of Garnet isn’t really brought up again until Cry For Help, and that episode gives it far more meaning and impact.

I actually believe that while Peridot, while not high ranking, is more than just a grunt on the level of a Ruby. Peridot was given responsibility for managing a planet-wide project, and she was able to get away with talking back to Jasper. Peridot, who we know cares a lot about authority, wouldn’t have talked back unless they were somewhat close in authority.

    Don’t forget the Gem shards!

I’ve decided that in every episode with Hunter in it, I will say hi to Hunter. Hi Hunter! 😀
Now for the inevitability that is a long-winded and annoying comment from me.

I really didn’t like this episode that much, like, the scene where they’re hunting for the Gem Shards was really my only part.

Pearl HAS shape shifted on screen before, GC! If you think back to Beach Party, when Amethyst and Garnet change clothes, the sound effect that plays is their respective shape shifting sound effect, and the sound effect that Pearl plays when SHE changes clothes is one we have never heard before, so we can assume that’s HER shape shifting sound effect. Changing clothes is TECHNICALLY shape shifting, considering that Peridot states that their clothes ARE part of their bodies, melded to them actually.

Didn’t we get a tweet or something that said we were gonna find out what Peridot’s SUMMONED weapon is pretty soon? Well, in Gem Glow Pearl states that with “hard work, you too can master your own dance” and we know how she tends to project onto others, plus she didn’t have her spear in The Answer, so I believe what happened was: Garnet joined the Crystal Gems, she learned how to summon Ruby’s gauntlet, even as Garnet, and that inspired Pearl to learn to summon her own weapon. We can assume that Rose and Pearl didn’t even know that different Gems could fuse in the first place, otherwise why take on Blue Diamond as Rose and Pearl and not Rainbow Quartz, also why would Rose have been surprised by Garnet, as much as she was.

I think that Desert Glass’s body IS that pillow, perhaps she’s just a very smol Gem. Clearly if the pillow is her body while corrupted, that would place her Gem either on her head, chest, or back because of its front and center location on the pillow.

The Gem Shards are more treated like object that remains, usually. The Fusion Experiments are a different story, I mean, life being restored to a shattered Gem is pretty huge. Does that mean that if you were to piece the Gem back together exactly the way it was before, and bury it underground, it would heal? I do actually think that we will find this out, like, if a main character dies and they wanna try and retcon it, like if Peridot dies and they use this cop out to bring her back. I also think that in this way, their old personality and memories will be preserved, because the initial Fusion Experiment seemed to recognize Garnet, like, it didn’t attack, it just kinda touched her. I believe that if you broke those apart and stuck ’em back together the proper way, you’d get the original Gem back without any problems, seeing how arguably seemlessly these Fusion Experiments seem to form, also we see during its regeneration, the original bodies of the original Gems ARE present in its “memory”, and ARE still sentient enough to scream.

What Steven needs is a YOUNG Gem friend, like, a new Gem that can learn how to be an Earthling first and a Gem second. If we end up getting Centipeetle and she has like, amnesia or something, that could be a good start. Let her be an Earthling first.

Hehehe, Pearl is the child who is used to lying to her parents all the time. Just like Connie, really.

Anyway, sorry for talking so long. :C

      Hi, bud!

I’m surprised more wasn’t made of a subtle bit made even more subtle by the camera work: Garnet (apparently) had a sip of her soda! We noticeably never actually see her drink it, but the level of the beverage sure appears to be lower when she puts the glass down.
