It took the final season of the series, but we finally got to meet Hilda’s father: Anders! He’s sadly no bellkeeper, but he’s a wandering adventurer with a pathological aversion to commitment—and it hasn’t been doing good things to his daughter’s family life.

And this clearly won’t be the time for Anders to stick around and finally be Hilda’s dad, but on the balance it’s probably best that he got kidnapped by our shadowy figures rather than being pulped by a troll.

As far as cliffhangers go, Hilda being turned into a troll at the end of the second season rated quite highly. Now that we’re discussing the movie, it’s finally time to discuss how that turned out.

We find ourselves living in a world where the political commentary of the movie hits harder than ever (though we haven’t seen any real-world safety patrol officers carrying around assault flashlights just yet), but at least we get a feel-good ending.

How many tropes did you spot in this episode? Because we found quite a few without really even looking. But if having a beautiful song to montage over is wrong, we don’t want our cartoons to be right.

All of the action is done, even a lot of the drama, but that doesn’t mean that the show ran out of ideas. This is all about letting the characters finally grow as they move into the future, and even about a delicious new snack. (Or a meal.)
