New episode: Say Uncle will air on April 2, 2014

Well, it’s finally here: the Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa crossover. Some have been dreading this day, but the crew behind Steven Universe seems to be really confident in this episode, and now we’re finally going to see how well they did with it.

The date of April 2nd, right after April Fools, might make some people wonder, but we suppose we’ll just have to wait and see. The episode will air at 5:30 PM EDT, so make sure you don’t miss it: people will definitely be talking about this one, no matter how it turns out.

After #StevenBomb: predictions for season two

It’s not too late to write this, since technically Open Book was produced with the rest of season one. With Joy Ride, the first episode of season two not to premier during #StevenBomb, however, it’s time to make some predictions about what will happen over the course of the season.

There are fifty-one episodes to go, plus two more episodes from season one to air, and we only know what two will be about. It’s time to start speculating.

Ratings for Open Book

It was another poor week for Cartoon Network, but Open Book  did well for itself and got 1,729,000 viewers. This gives Steven Universe still another week in second place among the Cartoon Network premiers.

Speaking of the others, here’s how they did this week:

  1. Teen Titans Go at 6:00 with 1,886,000
  2. Steven Universe at 5:00 with 1,729,000
  3. Regular Show at 7:30 with 1,492,000

Immediate reaction to Open Book

Yep, definitely a character episode. There’s not too much lore to be found in this one, though we enjoyed having a second look at Rose’s room. The twist was very interesting; of course we had no reason to fear another bog-standard plotline.

This was only the second episode without any of the other Crystal Gems in it, so we’ll be waiting for Shirt Club and Story For Steven to see whether Garnet’s outfit will be the season-one or season-two version in the three episodes formerly a part of season one.

What to expect from Open Book

It’s an episode where two characters are in a room that will do anything they ask. Steven knows not to ask for too much, so we’re not going to see Rose’s room over-taxed again. What could possibly go wrong, then?

Well surely you’ve seen some variant of the killer VR plotline (the holodeck from Star Trek being a particularly dangerous example), so hopefully Open Book will steer clear of such a common cliché (them being trapped inside until they resolve the story won’t count as an avoidance). If that’s avoided, though, it’s hard to predict what twist they could introduce to the episode—there are just too many possibilities.

No big backstory information is expected in Open Book, so look forward to a great Steven and Connie episode. Unless, of course, the episode turns out to be mostly about telling a seemingly unrelated story, like Garnet’s Universe was, in which case we’ll have to go into overdrive playing Spot the Foreshadowing (really we should have seen Hopper and Hoppy as representing Ruby and Sapphire far earlier than we did).
