Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 83: Garnet’s Universe

PodcastTitleGC13 and Sophia discuss everyone’s favorite piece of Garnet fan fiction: Garnet’s Universe.

It’s fun, it’s anime, and it’s over 9000. The word “filler” might come up a lot, but it doesn’t have to be a dirty word (and remember, foreshadowing comes in many forms). Plus, it has an epic training song.

How do you remember who’s Hopper and who’s Hoppy? It might just be the great question of our time, but if you have trouble keeping who’s who straight then just remember that Garnet has trouble with their names too, and they’re her secret animal friends.

Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 82: Fusion Cuisine

PodcastTitleGC13 and Hunter discuss Alexandrite’s debut episode: Fusion Cuisine.

It may not be the best episode ever, but it’s the one that gave us the term “mid-season pre-finale”, which has retroactively been applied to the Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem two-parter. Plus, Steven in a little bowtie. What’s not to love?

Well, Pearl did develop an incredibly strong aversion to eating, thirty-two episodes into the series. That was a little weird. Maybe someone should close the gate, lest anything happen to the pie.

Still, if this episode doesn’t get you hyped to go work on an apple farm, then what will?

Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 81: Keep Beach City Weird

PodcastTitleGC13 does his best to discuss Keep Beach City Weird. (Hey, at least it’s a Ronaldo episode, right?)

There are some heavy things in this episode: the breaking of Ronaldo especially, but also Pearl’s observations on why humans form conspiracy theories. That doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom though: just because Ronaldo functions as a great stand-in for a lore fan doesn’t mean GC13 can’t wonder about what Ronaldo means for the lore.

Plus, let’s not ever forget how right Ronaldo was: it’s the Great Diamond Authority who rule the Gems. How will our diplomat save us?

Question: How strong is Amethyst?

amethystposeAmethyst started the series as the least effective warrior of the Crystal Gems: far weaker than Garnet, she seemed to have a knack for using her whip to place herself or the team in danger, and little else. After Reformed she started fighting quite a bit smarter, but what is her potential for raw power?

We know that a quartz should be very strong—Jasper was at least as strong as Garnet. Amethyst is, however, an “overcooked runt”, having stayed in the ground for too long. This means it would make sense for Amethyst to be permanently weak. Reformed even seemed to show that Amethyst’s gem simply couldn’t handle generating a physical form more appropriate to a quartz, malfunctioning under the stress.

If it makes sense though, why do we wonder? Peridot gave us a lot to think about in Too Far, saying that Amethyst can do everything a normal quartz can do after seeing a display of her prowess with her whip. Depending on how it’s interpreted, one line might even have said that Amethyst could even look like a normal Amethyst if she knew what they looked like (of course it could also mean she’d know what she was missing if she had seen a normal Amethyst).

There’s also an interesting pattern in fusions: Sugilite, formed when Garnet fuses with Amethyst, is much bigger and stronger than Sardonyx, formed when Garnet fuses with Pearl. Plus, even though size isn’t everything (see Rainbow Quartz) it seems to normally be a good indicator of power, and Opal is far bigger than Garnet while Amethyst and Pearl seem roughly equivalent in mass with Ruby and Sapphire.

So it appears that when thrown into a fusion, Amethyst brings a lot more power than Pearl does despite not out-massing her by much (she may be much stockier, but she’s far shorter).

That means that despite there being a good reason for Amethyst to be as weak as she currently is, we should watch out: the show might be hinting that it’s possible for our Amethyst to become as strong as she was meant to be.

“Summer of Steven” due from June through August

newspapergemsEntertainment Weekly has the scoop for us. Relevant to our interests: Steven Universe will be airing new episodes all summer starting in June!

In an odd decision however, it appears that the new “seasons” are 26 episodes long rather than 52, so while the article mentions five seasons of Steven Universe they are still the same 156 episodes we already knew about.

Looking back at Log Date 7 15 2

peridotthumbsupA slice of life episode to help us unwind after some hard-hitting plot episodes? Wow, thanks! (That’s how humans express gratitude, right?) Log Date 7 15 2 came right when we needed it, and it was definitely a great way to end the bomb.

Every bit of character development Peridot had that needed to be shown but couldn’t be without depriving Message Received of its tension was stuffed into this episode to glorious effect:

  • Innocent curiosity
  • Delighting in new-found freedom
  • Media bingeing
  • Lioning the mood
  • Most shocking of all: attempting fusion

The part with Camp Pining Hearts was just excellent: not only is the show’s very concept funny without trying too hard to be wacky (a TV show about an unrepentantly Canadian summer camp—priceless), but the way Peridot predictably gets sucked into it after decrying it as worthless was good as well. The way she couldn’t help but analyze the show told us a bit about her (she can join Ronaldo as one of our spirit animals), and she gifted the fanbase a new catchphrase: It’s subtext.

Speaking of subtext, the subtext of fusion was dangerously close to becoming just text during the talk and fusion attempt Garnet and Peridot had.

Of course no recap of Log Date 7 15 2 can be complete without mentioning Opal’s appearance. We mentioned Amethyst and Pearl dancing in Steven’s Birthday, then they fused so easily here. Can we get more Opal in the second half of season two? As always, we hopal so.
