Immediate reaction to Same Old World

This episode exceeded expectations on the lore front. We’ve had one theory directly confirmed (though it was pretty strongly implied already before), and another all but directly confirmed (it’s not what was said, it’s what was shown). Flashbacks really are fantastic, aren’t they?

Plus, as far as setting the show up for the future? Well, that hope was definitely realized (as we all knew it would be, thanks to the leaks, but it’s still good to see).

  1. I didn’t think Lapis’ story would be so….simple.
It seems too simple, but that could just be me.

As simplistic as it seemed, you can’t expect Steven Universe to crank out Shakespeare in 11 minutes.

      1. Of course, which means there could be much more to the story. It’s probably just me, though.

I think it’s simple because there is some important information tied to what happened around her, but not directly involving her. If it was more complex, we would probably have learned more than we are supposed to, the first thing coming to mind is that big flash after Homeworld fled, which seems to be what left the remaining Crystal Gems in poor shape.

They should have spent a whole episode on lapis backstory,
I really felt this episode was rushed…

    1. steven universe has problems with pacing. but in the show’s defense, there’s not much you can do in 11 minutes.

I think that SU is so good BECAUSE it’s 11 minutes only. Artists sometimes do their best work when they have constraints placed upon them.

I don’t think it’s rushed, they just showed exactly as much as we need to know now. I’m certain more will come up as Lapis inevitably comes into conflict with Homeworld again, since they’re likely to threaten her newly adopted home now.

Did anyone see the gem that poofed lapis. It looked a lot like bismuth to me…

Lots and lots of people saw that. It seems to be the highlight of the episode for theorists out there! I’m curious, but it’s just a footnote at this point really. Hopefully the show will talk about her more later. (If she’s the one bubbled in Lion’s mane, anyway.)

The fact that they spent quite a bit of time showing Steven looking for lion in the same ep that the new gem is seen was definitely a deliberate storytelling parallel.
