Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 59: the music

PodcastTitleKen, GC13, and Sophia are joined by online columnist Eric Thurm (who you most likely know from his AV Club reviews of Steven Universe episodes).

Of course everyone has to talk about their favorite songs. Yes, it’s always a tough question (so many to choose from!), but you get your answers. 🙂

Eric’s article in Pitchfork is brought up, and it covers Ms. Sugar’s use of music in her cartoons. No one can deny that Steven Universe is a very musical show, and with her recent guest appearance on Adventure Time (the show she was on previously) producing another excellent song she wrote… well, the article has a link to Ms. Sugar singing the demo, so go listen to it.

Does the Jam Buddies song always make you think of the Little Butler theme?

the way they delivered it just hit me so hard.

Also I have to thank Sophia for that line: “You hopeul’ for Opal” … To guud’
    Love the Podcast as always.

The instrumental music from the Lapis Lazuli two-parter is incredible, especially “Mirror Match” with a part to match each of the gems during their fights. Listening to that song, I can almost picture the entire fight scene-by-scene. “Alone Together” (the Stevonnie fusion theme) is so groovable (and it’s been pointed out, reminiscent of Estelle’s “American Boy”), and “I’m Still Here” is wordlessly heartbreaking, so one of those is probably my runner-up.

Also, the Jay-Z/Alicia Keys song is called “Empire State of Mind” and yes, the mashups of that with “Bacon Pancakes” are A++.

Here are my three favorite pieces, which have sadly never been released:

    1. Laser Light Cannon: The ost that starts immediately after let me drive my van ends, and ends when the red eye explodes.

    2. Onion Trade: The ost that starts as Onion starts walking towards Steven on the boardwalk and ends with creepy darkening of the background behind Onion.

    3. Onion Trade: The ost during the battle with Onion and the replicator wand

Speaking of Space Oddity, who else thinks that the melody of the opening song of Steven Universe sounds very similar to Space Oddity?

I remember watching Jailbreak when it came out. I wasn’t surprised, but only because I had recently started reading/listening to the LSS a couple weeks prior.

I agree with Ken, the season 1 opening is great!

Also, Eric, I’ve read every single one of your reviews, almost immediately when they are released. Basically, the first thing I do after watching a new episode is to immediately go to the AV club to read your opinion on it. The 15 minute delay between then end of an episode and the moment that the AV club posts your piece can be frustrating. (I basically do the same thing with every show I watch, so I’ve read all of Oliver’s stuff on Adventure Time, and all of Guardian Enzo’s stuff on any anime that I watch).

I prefer the score by aivi & surasshu rather than the lyrical songs. if I tried to list all my favorite lyrical OR non-lyrical songs this comment would go on forever. you guys should do a garbage podcast AND the lunar sea spire podcast. but I guess I should shut up about that, that was weeks ago.

For non-lyrical, one I think should be brought up is Lion’s Ocean. As for lyrical, my favorite is Stronger Than You for the reasons yall mentioned, but I also love that sequence because it not only has Garnet being a badass, it also shows each of the Crystal Gems utilizing one of their unique abilities. Steven uses his hybrid nature to grab the destabilizer, Amethyst uses her whip to capture Peridot, and Pearl tries to take control of the ship. It also is amazing how it adds more character to Garnet than any single episode before, caps off the season, and ends with the Temple, the show’s Homebase, being significantly affected.

I also am a sort of fan of Ronaldo. My interest is more in how his character is going to develop, and if he’ll play any part in the actual stuff with Homeworld, especially after Full Disclosure, since you can see him carrying away a part of the hand ship.

What I love about the music in the show is that it’s not just a theme composed to back a scene, it’s that every moment in the scene lines up to specific moments in the song. Like, you can listen to most of the themes and be like “Oh that’s the moment where Pearl does the thing!”.

My favorite thing is just any theme that plays just during normal dialogue and as characters change dialogue and different characters speak, their own specific instruments will be the underlying theme of that moment, like when Pearl is talking her piano will play lightly in the background and if Amethyst suddenly interrupts, her sick beats will start up, and Garnet is always paired with her synth beat things and Lion always has his chiptune and light piano and it’s just really great at setting the scene and really immersing you in the show.

    Also it’s been a while, hi guys~

That vine you mentioned was Garnet’s line of: “This is who we are, this is who I am, and if you think you can stop me then you need to think again!”

    It was Jasper’s first reveal.

Props to Sophia for not losing any shit this episode. She was put down almost every time she opened her mouth. This guest seemed a little too full of himself.

      Strange perspective. Eric was great.
