Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 16: Shirt Club

PodcastTitleGC13 (aka TheRealGC13), Dakota, and Hunter discuss the last season one episode to airShirt Club. With season one finally finished (and after only three season two episodes have aired), it is officially on.

It may have aired a bit out of order, but even if there’s some disagreement over how good the episode is, everyone’s glad we got Shirt Club. Having a bit more time with Mayor Dewey is especially enjoyed, as is the fact that Pearl (aka Bird Mom) seemed to have turned her stool into a perch.

Now that we have (most of) season two ahead of us, we can ask the tough questions: When will Greg go on tour to promote Water Witch? When will Steven’s birthday be? And when do we get to see Garnet and Pearl fuse!?!

Song of the week: Peedee’s Blues

Poor Steven. When he found out that Buck thought his drawing was bad, and that he wouldn’t stop making it into shirts, he felt awful. It didn’t help that the Crystal Gems wouldn’t solve the problem, either. Still, Steven persevered and made them all understand, putting smiles across the town’s faces. To commemorate his brief distress, Peedee’s Blues is this week’s song of the week.

The rebellion: as of the start of season two

Ah, it’s finally here: the last bit of speculation fueled by #StevenBomb. This is probably the hardest piece to write, which is saying something considering that we also wrote two pieces of speculation about the homeworld despite getting no closer to the homeworld than a ship that never made it far out of Earth’s orbit.

But the rebellion is never spoken of much, and while the Crystal Gems are tight-lipped about the homeworld as well some facts force their way through. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to go on about the rebellion, just that the information about it isn’t as rich.

What we learned from Shirt Club

It’s another one of those “character episodes” we’ve been having so many of lately, since #StevenBomb forced an adjustment to the schedule that clustered a bunch of character episodes together. We’re crafty though, and we’ve sniffed out at least something lore-related to consider in Shirt Club.

Ratings for Shirt Club

Another rough week. Shirt Club only pulled in 1,423,000 viewers this week.

Here’s how the Cartoon Network premiers did:

  1. Teen Titans Go at 6:00 with 1,804,000
  2. Adventure Time at 7:30 with 1,571,000
  3. Steven Universe at 5:30 with 1,423,000
  4. Clarence at 5:00 with 1,397,000

Immediate reaction to Shirt Club

Well, there’s not much lore here (a smidgen, but… Well, that means not much), since it’s a very character-centric episode again. We don’t think there will be much lore or speculation to be had, but if we focused on the characters instead we’d be really happy with what we learned about Buck. Heck, even Mayor Dewey had some good moments. If this had aired before Political Power, the sudden focus on him might not have seemed so abrupt.

What to expect from Shirt Club

This is another episode where anything can happen. We know it will have Steven hanging out with Buck Dewey, but really: you just can’t predict the twist on an episode that’s had such a mundane-sounding summary released. There will definitely be a twist, but it’s just too tough to guess what it will be.

Since this is the last season-one episode to air, we can rule out a new power and Peridot. Since the preview involves Greg giving guitar lessons, we can hope he shows up. Other than that, it’s Steven Universe—who knows what’s gonna happen?

New episode: Love Letters will air on April 23, 2015

Ah, now this is the life: we’re into pure season two now, and while there’s a hiatus looming it’s still some weeks off yet. Next week we’ll see another new episode, Love Letters, airing on April 23 at 5:30 PM EDT.
