Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 104: Last One Out of Beach City

PodcastTitleGC13 and Hunter discussĀ Last One Out of Beach City (which may or may not be the stealth pilot for a new spinoff series, Pearl Versus the World).

This episode was a lot to process. That could be the end of the description right there (so says our voice of reason), but our ultimate wingman is encouraging us to write more.

The big thing everyone is talking about, of course, is Pearl’s new friend, the Mystery Girl. She’s certain to show up again in more episodes later in the series, but where Pearl’s relationship will go is an open question (though one people have certainly already answered in their fanart headcanons).

I agree with Hunter that it’s likely Pearl is subconsciously using Mystery Girl as some sort of replacement for Rose. Not in the relationship aspect like GC13 thought, but more like her resemblance with Rose helps remind Pearl of her positive memories with Rose, even if it’s only in small ways. Considering the way Gems experience time, Mystery Girl could be Pearl’s rebound relationship.

Amethyst was listed as a wingman so, does that mean Pearl and Mystery girl are GFs?

I hope that this is Pearl’s way of understanding how to be in a 2 way relationship. Being One sided with someone can really hinder you, so I can’t wait to see how this will turn out. Maybe we will see a lot more growth out of Pearl.

I need to aggressively point out to Hunter that one of the other ‘trivial’ things a director does is a minor little thing called /helping the voice actors craft their performance as their director./

Two further objections to Hunter (sorry to pick on you today Hunter, but you’re the one I’m in opposition to for this episode.)

      1) I don’t think Kroll’s song was on the radio, I think Pearl turned on the tape-deck or CD player. Rememeber that she is driving Greg’s car and going to the show Greg wanted to attend: i can see him having a recording of Kroll’s music.

      2) I don’t feel like we missed anything in regards to Pearl wanting to be more cool – it is a partial sequel to Mr. Greg and her realizing how trapped she’s been in herself, and it’s a more direct sequel to Gem Hunt, where we see Pearl really wants to be seen and perceived by the kids as cool and a good teacher, and all this dates back to Coach Steven where Pearl first lays-bear how badly she wants to be regarded positively by the people around her. (Since at least Bismuth and probably as far back as Pearl’s Scabbard we’ve seen Pearl be confronted by her own legacy of who she used to be and who she has become – Bismuth is particular reminded her of her days as a rebel, which have brought a lot of old memories to the fore. Hell, let’s drag this back to Ocean Gem: Pearl has been able o bury the past for centuries upon centuries, but ever since Lapis brought Homeworld back into the lives Pearl has spent the last year/two years confronted by that past repeatedly, and finding she doesn’t like the person she has become. (She and Amethyst have been coming closer for a long time now, too, since On the Run. See especially her and Amythst talking things over in… I want to say it was Keystone motel, but certainly in that Bomb.)
