GC13, Ken, and (if you listen until the end) Hunter discuss the start of #StevenBomb3, the beginning of #WeekOfSardonyx: Cry For Help.
There’s a lot to talk about. Who would have expected Sardonyx to turn out looking the way she did? What is the deal with the Crying Breakfast Friends? Should Garnet forgive Pear(l)?
Amethyst was willing to come to Pearl’s defense, so that’s a sign of real character growth after her introspection in Reformed.
We’re starting a five-episode story arc centered on Pearl, so who knows what’s gonna happen? Friday will probably end with a fusion. Who do you want it to be: Sardonyx or Opal?

That ojou-sama laugh *oooo~hohohoho!!*
talking about sex, i agree with that, is kind of a magical thing people do with each other and is amazing when is doing with good intention and consent.
Also Matt Burnet said something about it:

So to me, that would means, casual sex? casual good stuff two or more people do with each other.
but on reedit, they kind blured the sex:

Matt Burnett says that fusion doesn’t necessarily represent sex, or anything else romantic in nature.
I dunno, i think people only think as sex as romantic, and no stuff about casual or between friends and etc.
Well, i am a 22 years old virgin so i don´t have any experience with that!
Sardonyx could not appear again this week and I’d still consider it week of Sardonyx as long as there is still a focus on Garnet/Pearl, since Sardonyx IS their relationship. As for her personality, it caught me off guard at first, but I made sense to me as a combination of Pearl’s tendency to be theatrical and Garnet’s tendency to show off and one-up everyone. We also know that Garnet is a master of comedy, and Pearl finally having a sense of humor would be as goofy as Sardonyx. Sardonyx’s warhammer even informs their personalities, being a goofy cartoon hammer. It’s big, bold, theatrical, and precise. I thought Sardonyx was going to be like you guys originally thought, but Sardonxy turned out to express the sides of Garnet and Pearl we’ve only started to get hints at.
ruby has fire powers , sapphire has ice powers, they both have 1 gauntlet has a weapon and tomorrow we will get a whole episode of them arguing
If fusing is like having sex to gems , then eww
I saw how steven said “I’d Forgive Pear” was foreshadowing
Is it just me or did Sardonyx’s laugh resemble Naga’s from The Slayers anime alot? Just me? Ok.
I hope we get a focus on Garnet and Pearl, Amathyst needs a break for sure and I hope we meet a new gem soon! Maybe someone actually got Peridot’s message? Or maybe they save Lapis and she joins the crystal gems? Who knows, either way I am excited!
I don’t think of fusion as an allegory for sex, because of the fusion with Steven and Connie (they’re still kids and this is a kids show) that forms Stevonnie. It’s not completely and always about sex, but fusion is something very intimate. It requires huge trust and openness to one another, which made Garnet angry when Pearl used her for a selfish reason.
I understand that fusing with Garnet made the other Crystal Gems feel stronger about themselves, but Garnet sees fusion as something very important (because Ruby and Sapphire as she is the epitome of their love, not to mention fusion is her whole being) and for the gems to disrespect that made Garnet feel as though the gems don’t respect her.
Pearl regrets for what she did, she’s definitely not proud of it, and her emotions and actions make her seem more realistic as well as relatable. Knowing her, she’ll be doing her best to make up for what she’s done, and Amethyst will be with her to help patch things up between the two. Along with Steven, of course!!
Fusion doesn’t always equals sex, but yes, it is something intimate that requires a lot of trust.
Great podcast!
I’m really surprised you guys didn’t spend any time talking about Peridot in the beginning, or how she explicitly called for help from Yellow Diamond. I think this is the first time we’ve heard of Yellow Diamond officially on the show, and seems like a big deal and foreshadowing the conflict for Season 2.

Most episodes I wonder why we didn’t cover certain topics. It just happens that way.
In this case though, I think it was because the cry for help wasn’t covering anything we didn’t know. Her calling it the Crystal system was certainly interesting, but we already knew she and Jasper reported to Yellow Diamond since The Return.
(I didn’t listen to these as they came out in case spoilers, so here are my thoughts for each episode, having watched the whole week.)
I didn’t like the images of Sardonyx when I first saw her but I think it goes really well with her personality. Certain pieces of fanart definitely helped me come around to the design. It’s def not what I expected from Garnet and Pearl but it does work very well with the actual Sardonyx stone.
As far as “the week of Sardonyx” it’s pretty much where Sardonyx represents the relationship between.
Amethyst’s song was not…particularly impactful, I thought.
I also wondered why they don’t form Opal to feel more powerful. Garnet is not the only relationship they have.
Future vision is limited by Garnet’s perception, and I think each gem maintains a certain level of their own consciousness, we saw the same thing where Lapis uses Malachite to trap Jasper.
I SO want to see Steven fuse with any gem, but especially Pearl to compare. I wonder if they even have the same names and powers or if it’s just completely different.
I kind of loved the way they closed the episode. It made it really clear that the issue was not over and done with. Pearl messed up and this can’t be fixed in a single episode.
