Song of the week: Desert Glass

Because the events of Ocean Gem temporarily turned Beach City into Desert City, this week we recognize Desert Glass as our song of the week.

The Crystal Gems after Ocean Gem

As an important milestone episode, Ocean Gem gave us some information to chew on. We’ve already discussed the implications of the magic mirror, and tomorrow we’ll talk about what Gem society might be like, but today we’ll be talking about the Crystal Gems and what their history might be.

What the magic mirror could mean

Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem gave us a lot of new information to work with, but as is usually the case we now have even more questions than we did before—very interesting questions that it will be great to have answered as the series goes on.

This post pertains to the magic mirror that gives Mirror Gem its title, and the many questions raised by its existence. Later posts will wonder about the history of the Crystal Gems, and finally wonder what Gem society is like.

If you’ve already had a chance to see the episodes, then please do read on.

What we learned from Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem

The Steven Crewniverse definitely delivered on the hype that earned Steven Universe its highest ratings yet with the airing of Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem on Thursday. Either one of these episodes by themselves would have been a bombshell. Putting them both together in one week gives us a huge amount of information about Gems to work with.

Read on to see what lore bombs were dropped on us.

Ratings for Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem

It looks like Steven Universe did pretty well in the ratings on Thursday: Zap2It is reporting 2.335 million viewers for Steven Universe last night, which is a new record for the show.

Let’s all just hope this is a sign of things to come. Mr. Burnett seems to say that we’re going to be getting a much higher pace of heavy-hitting episodes than we’ve been getting in the past, so let’s buckle up and see how high the show can go.

Immediate reaction to Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem

Well, it looks like we won’t be getting our Fortune Telling merit badge any time soon.

Still, these episodes gave us the best kind of look at the lore: they confirmed what we already had been able to guess, and gave us something tantalizing to look out for in future episodes.

So, take this away:

  • The Gem Backstory page has quite a lot of material to fill it out now.
  • We can start a Crystal Gem backstory page now too!
  • Believe the hype.

Saturday will have the more detailed lore implications, so if you missed the episode today you have a bit of time to catch them. Sunday will have the speculation for what it all means, and that post is going to be a big one. 🙂
