Ian Jones-Quartey leaving the show

whatdoesitmeanBad news you guys: Ian Jones-Quartey, the show’s supervising director and co-executive producer, is leaving the show. He broke the news in this tweet.

It’s never a good sign when someone so instrumental to the show leaves (too much rocking the boat, changing a good thing), but he indicated that there are plenty of episodes he’s worked on that we haven’t seen yet, so it will be a while before we see how the team managed the transition.

As for what’s next for Mr. Jones-Quartey? Well, he isn’t saying what he’s moving on to, but the easy money says that he’ll be working on his new cartoon, Lakewood Plaza Turbo. So when that comes out we’ll be able to see how our little family of cartoons has grown.

Yeah, how’s this for good news? A break in the hiatus to air five new Steven Universe episodes in one week.

Judging from the characters in the pictures, it’s a fair bet that Monday will give us Sworn to the Sword, where Pearl teaches Connie how to sword fight, and Tuesday will give us Rising Tides/Crashing Skies, an episode where Ronaldo investigates the Crystal Gems.

PodcastTitleGC13 and Hunter discuss the second episode of the series: Laser Light Cannon and discover an interesting fact: the second and second-to-last episodes of the season both involve Steven riding onto the beach to save the Crystal Gems. Is this a coincidence, or are the sneople at it again?

Has the question of why the homeworld sent a Red Eye, a seemingly antiquated piece of technology finally been answered? It might actually be an updated version of an old design, one far bigger. Of course we still have no ideas on how it might have been meant to report back to the homeworld, however. Give us time, and maybe we’ll come up with something.

The fantastic music of the series also comes up, as do the wonderful fan comics of the Crystal Gems raising baby Steven. We love you guys.

So how much do you like Greg? He may not be a perfect porkchop, but as a hot dog he sure seems to be doing a great job.

The upcoming Guide to the Crystal Gems

pearlthebraveWe’re sure you’re all eagerly awaiting the end of the hiatus. While we don’t have any news about that (though we’re still figuring it will probably be similar to last summer’s hiatus which ended in August), we do have some interesting information about the upcoming Guide to the Crystal Gems thanks to an interview Ms. Sugar did with io9 last week.

Since the guide book covers the show’s lore we are, of course, eagerly awaiting its release on Amazon. It’s the kind of lore that Ms. Sugar is teasing about in the interview, about Gems and Gem society, that we’re really interested in:

There’s a lot going on on the Gem Homeworld that he doesn’t know about at all, and a lot of rules that exist there that the Gems we know don’t follow!

…

Steven’s going to learn a lot more soon on the show, about what each of the Crystal Gems are supposed to be… it’s very different than the way they’ve been living on Earth. It is very unusual for Gems like Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl to be living and working together the way they do, almost as unusual as it is for Steven to exist!

That’s some Big Deal stuff right there. Just the possibilities for how this information could be relayed to Steven are exciting, let alone actually learning it for ourselves.

The book will be released in early October, so assuming that the hiatus does end in August (and again, while it did last year after starting in May, that’s just an assumption), that means that we’re going to get a big lore bomb dropped on us pretty quickly after the hiatus—we rather doubt that Cartoon Network would plan their schedule so that this information would be revealed in a peripheral.

So brace yourselves: when the hiatus ends, the wait will have been so worth it.

StevenTVIt’s time for another Big Deal episode to discuss. This time we’re here talking about Giant Woman, probably a big contender for Top 5 lists for Steven Universe, and definitely one of the defining episodes of the series.

Gem fusion was a big thing. Who here remembers when they saw Opal for the first time? It’s probably pretty hard to forget. She was such a wonderful introduction to the concept of fusion, it was just… Wow. Steven’s awe-struck face probably looked like a lot of ours.

Of course right after Giant Woman aired people noticed some things: Garnet had lit up two separate gems on the temple door in Together Breakfast, and she was also the strongest member of the group. Even then the Garnet Fusion Theory was off to a good start.

We also got to see an interesting gem locale: the Sky Spire. Looking a lot like a nature trail, it was clearly built up to lead to the Heaven Beetle (or the Geode Beetle of Heaven).

At first we thought that the nature trail was made by Gems, but if, as Mr. Burnett says, the Heaven Beetle is a corrupted Gem, that means that humans probably made the trail. We’ve also, as of Rose’s Scabbard seen another place on Earth with floating chunks of rock just like at the Sky Spire: at the Strawberry Battlefield.

So what do you all make of these two interesting things, the hints of Garnet’s status as a fusion and the Sky Spire? When did you first hear the fan theories about Garnet, and when did you come to accept them? And what do you think the deal is with the Sky Spire? Discuss it all in the comments.
