What does Historical Friction say about how different Steven’s world is?

We learned some interesting facts from Historical Friction. First of all, Beach City was settled almost two hundred years in the past (by someone six generations back from Mayor Dewey, so the time scale checks out). That would just be an interesting piece of trivia if it wasn’t also apparently the first human settlement in the Americas (or at least anywhere near the Crystal Temple), and its founder didn’t know that he was going to reach land. This is quite a bit different from our history, where knowledge of the New World became widespread knowledge about five hundred years before our time.

So where does that leave us? Wondering why everything is so different.

What could #StevenBomb3 mean?

#StevenBomb3 has put us into a decidedly speculative mood. While we did get some hard information, most of the information is a lot more fun to speculate about. With that in mind, here’s the list of what we’ll be speculating about after this #StevenBomb:

What are Rubies and Sapphires like on the Homeworld?
The role of Pearls (and Peridots) is something we can make a reasonable guess at, but Rubies and Sapphires are still mysteries. There are some interesting implications about them in Keystone Motel though.

What does Historical Friction say about how different Steven’s world is?
Historical Friction certainly makes it sound like William Dewey was being braver than he knew by founding Beach City (and only two hundred years in the past). Were the dangers so great that he and his crew were the first humans to settle the region since the Crystal Gem rebellion?

Why does Earth have an expiration date?
This line apparently got lost by the Crystal Gems in the heat of battle, but we fans heard it and we’re certainly wondering what it means. It’s almost certain that this is something that will be explained as episodes go on, meaning future speculation posts will wonder “does this relate to the expiration date?”, but it’s time to see what the most likely option (among things we already know about) is.

What did we learn from #StevenBomb3?

There was a lot of information hidden in #StevenBomb3 (as one would expect from a grouping of five episodes!). Plenty of it was speculation fuel, but we also got some more certain stuff to discuss.

The warp pads and the robonoids
Well it looks like the Galaxy Warp didn’t get hit with the shooting star after all (we pity the fool who that baby gets used on). We also learned that the robonoids never repaired the communication hub warp.

Peridot’s hard suit
Ever since her first appearance people have wondered if Peridot’s body was simple projected “clothing” like the outfits the Crystal Gems wear or if it was something more substantial. Friend Ship gave us an answer, and we’ve also seen reactions from Peridot showing her what aspects of her suit she is and isn’t familiar with.

PodcastTitleStevenBomb3GC13 and Dakota blast off at the speed of light to recap #StevenBomb3. It wasn’t the heavy face-punch of plot that was the first #StevenBomb, but it was still a good run, wouldn’t you say?

The way the episodes fit together is discussed (this is definitely a five-episode story arc), as is Peridot’s propensity for escape (though there’s no consensus on which of her two escapes in Friend Ship was more believable).

Keystone Motel makes us realize just how little we know about the homeworld Gems: while we no longer believe Ruby and Sapphire to be artisans, it’s hard making educated guesses about what their actual roles are. Ruby does seem to be quite a bit more “expendable” than Sapphire though, with the temperament of a fighter.

Finally, Pearl should be back to normal after being quite frustrating to watch during this episode. The resolution of her stress, from Cry For Help came quickly but believably. To compensate for Pearl’s normalcy Peridot has made it official that she is now a Saturday morning cartoon villain.

“This planet has an expiration date.” “I’m just a Pearl.” There was a lot of interesting information in this episode, not all of it easily quotable. The future of Steven Universe promises to do some really good world building, if Friend Ship is any indication of what the crew is preparing to reveal.
