Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 24: Frybo

PodcastTitleGC13, Ken, and Dakota discuss the fifth episode of Steven Universe: Frybo. Ken and GC13 get right back to disagreeing—at least their first impressions of the episode disagreed, and that’s what we’re counting.

We get another mystery in Frybo: the origin of the gem shards. It’s certainly possible to make some educated guesses about how the gems came to be shattered, but so early in the series Steven isn’t willing to listen to even the sanitized history lesson Pearl offers, let alone the gritty real history.

It’s very interesting contrasting the older episodes with the newer ones, though. Steven has greatly grown as a character. If his job as a professional beach hunk never works out, at this rate he’ll have a great career in heroism ahead of him.

I’ve got a few bits of additional commentary. First, regarding Steven’s intelligence or alleged lack of it… He’s clever, he’s intelligent, but it’s buried under childlike inexperience and a state of not really knowing when to tune in and pay attention. Specifically, when he’s zoning out while Pearl is explaining the deal with the gem shards, his thought process segues into how he’s not paying enough attention to what Pearl’s saying. That’s metacognition: thinking about one’s thought patterns. It’s not as common in children as in adults, and those children who do engage in that sort of thinking tend to be a bit more self-aware, a bit more deliberate in their actions, and a bit more intelligent than their peers of similar age. It can be chalked up to inexperience, but I will contest anybody who claims that Steven isn’t smart.

Second, I see the fry tentacles and fry legs as potentially being the lingering remnant of the ability to project the gem’s form and shapeshift, if the gem shard is assumed to be part of a shattered Gem. When I consider the implications for using gem shards in, say, the Armor of the Fallen, the possibilities for how they looked in combat look even more disturbing than simply autonomous sets of armor: the pieces of the set could likely change shape and size!

Third, more Peedee would be fantastic. Just to echo you.

Finally, I wonder how Pearl lost the gem shards in the first place. Did Amethyst play a prank? Did the shard fall down the waterfall and tumble out of Amethyst’s room? I didn’t think to ask this question until now, but it’s is somewhat mystifying to me now that I have.
