“Summer of Steven” due from June through August

newspapergemsEntertainment Weekly has the scoop for us. Relevant to our interests: Steven Universe will be airing new episodes all summer starting in June!

In an odd decision however, it appears that the new “seasons” are 26 episodes long rather than 52, so while the article mentions five seasons of Steven Universe they are still the same 156 episodes we already knew about.

Looking back at Log Date 7 15 2

peridotthumbsupA slice of life episode to help us unwind after some hard-hitting plot episodes? Wow, thanks! (That’s how humans express gratitude, right?) Log Date 7 15 2 came right when we needed it, and it was definitely a great way to end the bomb.

Every bit of character development Peridot had that needed to be shown but couldn’t be without depriving Message Received of its tension was stuffed into this episode to glorious effect:

  • Innocent curiosity
  • Delighting in new-found freedom
  • Media bingeing
  • Lioning the mood
  • Most shocking of all: attempting fusion

The part with Camp Pining Hearts was just excellent: not only is the show’s very concept funny without trying too hard to be wacky (a TV show about an unrepentantly Canadian summer camp—priceless), but the way Peridot predictably gets sucked into it after decrying it as worthless was good as well. The way she couldn’t help but analyze the show told us a bit about her (she can join Ronaldo as one of our spirit animals), and she gifted the fanbase a new catchphrase: It’s subtext.

Speaking of subtext, the subtext of fusion was dangerously close to becoming just text during the talk and fusion attempt Garnet and Peridot had.

Of course no recap of Log Date 7 15 2 can be complete without mentioning Opal’s appearance. We mentioned Amethyst and Pearl dancing in Steven’s Birthday, then they fused so easily here. Can we get more Opal in the second half of season two? As always, we hopal so.

Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 80: Island Adventure

PodcastTitleGC13 and Sophia put on their sunscreen and head to a tropical island to discuss Island Adventure (underneath the molten lava moon, of course).

While Steven was being just as funny as always (if not more!), Lars and Sadie really were the stars of this episode. Lars may have been a sourpuss, but being trapped on a potentially dangerous island for days can tend to be quite a stressful experience.

Is it possible that some day Lars and Sadie will be right for each other? Or will that day be as elusive as the explanation for how Steven was able to be away from the temple so long without the Crystal Gems thinking to check the island they had just visited for him?

Answer: Pearls are servants

chorewheelWhile it was eventually a win for following the clues, the path to figuring out the purpose of Pearls wasn’t without its red herrings.

The first idea was that Pearls were technicians and were eventually replaced by Peridots. Considering how good Pearl is with technology, especially how she was able to make the Universe Mach 3 so quickly in Space Race, but also how she was the go-to gearhead in Political Power, this wasn’t even an unreasonable assumption to make.

However, Keeping it Together gave a big bit of information: Pearl likes doing chores. By itself that wouldn’t mean much, since she’s established to be fastidious bordering on neat freak, but it seemed to make sense:

  • Pearl was always the one doing the cleaning (such as in Steven the Sword Fighter and Coach Steven).
  • While her technological capabilities were impressive, she had very significant failures. The Universe Mach 3 was damaged while exiting the atmosphere, and her prototype robonoid disruptor didn’t work. (She’d later get a big win technologically in Friend Ship though, and was always good at fixing Greg’s van.)

After that, when Friend Ship aired, it seemed to seal the deal: “I’m just a Pearl.” Pearl needed someone to tell her what to do, she was useless on her own. When taken with the line “you weren’t built for fighting” from “Do It For Her”, Pearls being considered lowly by other Gems was pretty clear. As we would later find out, when the theory was confirmed in Back to the Barn, technicians aren’t super high-ranking on the Gem homeworld either, but at least they can hold their heads high around the servants.

So that was an interesting case, with a new episode coming in and supplanting old assumptions with a compelling new piece of evidence about Pearl that fit into a pattern that had been established well before in the show. It would see a bit more strengthening before finally being confirmed, but the mystery was correctly “solved” based on strong hints rather than an explicit statement.

Aivi and Surasshu post: Yellow Diamond

Ah, it feels good to have more music posted. This time, from Message Received, Aivi and Surasshu have posted the track Yellow Diamond (2:38) for everyone to enjoy!

Looking back at Message Received

happymechperidotAnd here it is: the master of overshadowing. Yellow Diamond herself, with the added bonus of a Pearl who doesn’t care because she doesn’t have to—she’s with the homeworld.

While in the first viewing it’s not immediately obvious what Peridot’s plan is (though Peridot’s redemption is still pretty likely even if you hadn’t seen the preview for Log Date 7 15 2), there are enough clues in her dialogue for her it to be clear that she was siding with Earth even at the start of the episode. Poor Peridot just wanted more episodes of Camp Pining Hearts, and Yellow Diamond simply wasn’t having any of it.

It was great seeing Amethyst have a moment just like one Jake from Adventure Time might have: being too mad to be able to come up with a mean nickname for Peridot. Pearl also did a great job at missing the point when she told Steven he could feed bad all he wanted back at the temple. Comedy gold, as always.

Of course, even if this was just the episode that finally confirmed that we’d be getting Peridot joining the team, it would be plenty great. That we got so much else too is just spoiling us.

Again, seeing Yellow Diamond was impressive. She’s a very business-oriented leader, not the mystical, distant ruler that Blue Diamond seemed to be.

Finally, a fun fact to just take note of: the moon base’s top room had blue glass, and we know that Earth was ruled (in the end, anyway) by Blue Diamond. The base Yellow Diamond was in during her call with Peridot had pink glass. Interesting, isn’t it?

Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 79: Secret Team

PodcastTitleGC13 and Hunter discuss another old favorite episode: Secret Team (definitely another episode worthy of a gold star).

A fun episode showing how Amethyst, Steven, and Garnet used to be earlier in the series (less responsible, less mature, and less warm, respectively), Secret Team is a great episode to watch if you want to appreciate some character development. Imagine post-Reformed Amethyst being so concerned with “busting” Pearl.

Of course poor Pearl was also willing to scold Steven as he threw himself under the bus (something a lot of fans took her to task for). She’s always had the willingness to be deceptive (even if apparently she’s not the best at it), hasn’t she?

Question: What repaired the Geode?

ducttapeThe ending of House Guest is quite difficult to interpret: Steven tries to repair the Geode with his healing saliva, and despite his regained confidence he fails. However there is no need to fear, as Greg quickly saves the day with a complex human tool: high-quality duct tape!

It shouldn’t be hard to understand why this explanation is a little hard to take at face value: the Geode is an enormous structure of hard stone which is containing an incredibly powerful force, and while that force is enough to widen the crack in the stone as Greg and Steven watch the duct tape is apparently enough to not just stop the growth of the crack but also contain the storm (which had been leaking into the surrounding area.)

The duct tape sparkled on Steven’s night stand, but then so did Greg’s van after Pearl fixed it—and she was giving a list of very mundane repairs she had done to it. That makes it a bit tough to be sure that the sparkles represented some kind of magical property being transferred to the duct tape, from Steven’s spit or from the sheer power of Greg’s belief (and what little hair he has left).

This mystery might never be solved. If it is, maybe we’ll learn where Steven’s healing powers went… But that’s a mystery for another week.
