Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 88: Same Old World

PodcastTitleGC13 and Hunter discuss the first episode of Steven Universe where Lapis has actually been happy: Same Old World.

There’s a flashback with lots of interesting goodies (including a Gem who has intrigued the fanbase and we hope to see again), as well as a bright future ahead for Lapis and Peridot (who may either become a farmer or simply work at the Big Donut).

It also had some very interesting animation, some very big hair, and was the first in-show appearance of Steven’s new hot dog duffel bag from the online short. We’re calling this a huzzah!

Steven has befriended the other Gems through some aspect of their character. Healing Lapis, appealing to Peridot’s logic ect.. While I’m sure the circumstances for her not actively attacking him will be hard to predict, I think he will appeal to her warrior side. She did say she respected Rose’s tactics. I think Steven will learn more about what it means to really fight for something, and use that experience to relate to and win over Jasper.

One thing that concerns me about this episode though is what Lapis thinks of the Cluster under their feet and the current intentions of Homeworld. She never wanted to be part of the conflict, but now Steven has convinced her to adopt Earth as her home, so I wonder how she will react when that home is threatened, since we never saw or heard her get updated on the Cluster or YD’s intentions for Earth.

Here’s what I hope for: I do doubt that Jasper will ever join the team or anything, but I would like to see an episode where Steven and Jasper are alone together and Jasper tells Steven the story of the war from her perspective. Telling old warstories I think would fit well with her character, and besides, it would be a good opportunity for Steven to learn some things about his mom that the crystal gems may or may not be hesitant to tell him about.
