GC13 and Sophia discuss everyone’s favorite piece of Garnet fan fiction: Garnet’s Universe.
It’s fun, it’s anime, and it’s over 9000. The word “filler” might come up a lot, but it doesn’t have to be a dirty word (and remember, foreshadowing comes in many forms). Plus, it has an epic training song.
How do you remember who’s Hopper and who’s Hoppy? It might just be the great question of our time, but if you have trouble keeping who’s who straight then just remember that Garnet has trouble with their names too, and they’re her secret animal friends.

While it could have just been a generic Final Attack, I got super strong Gurren Lagann Giga Drill Break vibes from Garnet’s final attack.
In terms of Attack the Light, Estelle didn’t record any new lines for the game (the credits only list Zach, Michaela, and Deedee), so all of her dialogue is lifted from the show, a good part of it from this episode (“So be it” when using the 6-punch combo, “This is bad!” when damaged into red zone, and “I’m not… strong enough” when unable to use an attack are the ones I noticed on rewatch, but I think there are a few others).
And an observation on the characters in this episode:
The apparent villain, who turns out to be an OK dude, has Lars’s voice. Steven thinks Lars may seem like a jerk, but is an OK dude.
The guy who asks for help, then turns out to be a supreme asshole, has Ronaldo’s voice. Steven, like everyone else, apparently cannot friggin’ stand Ronaldo.
It’s not that Steven can’t stand Ronaldo (he willingly goes to his place in Horror Club and welcomes him in Rising Tide/ Crashing Skies) but he sees Ronaldo as someone who appears nicer than Lars but can be dangerous, while Lars appears like an asshole but Steven tries to get on his good side.
Hmm, how do I differentiate between Garnet’s secret animal friends…
I guess I always see words/names ending in -er as being more formal than those ending in -y? The rabbit is formal and collected (training!). On the other hand, the frog… man… they’re all over the place. So by that logic, determining who’s Hoppy and who’s Hopper becomes pretty clear! Buuuuut that’d be too easy so you actually have to then switch ’em. So, in summary: the frog is Hopper and the rabbit is Hoppy. Phew!
Oh and I’m so like you when it comes to merch, Sophia. Like, I’d never get something that just has “STEVEN UNIVERSE” emblazoned on it or something. Probably something more along the lines of a “Mr. Universe” t-shirt (or maybe even a cheeseburger backpack if I can scrape enough cash together).
This is a wild stretch maybe….but the fact that Ronaldo had onion ring powers made me think of Wakaba (princess of the onion kingdom) from Utena. Hmmmmm….the creators of the show obviously have watched and loved Utena (it’s my all time favorite animated show), so it might not be that crazy of an idea. If you look at Wakaba’s character vs Ronaldo, there are a lot of similarities. The average normal person that knows about the ‘cool awesome’ people and wishes they could be special too….. In Japanese culture, i think “onion’ refers to something poorly made -of poor quality…
I’ve been listening to there podcasts since maybe ep. 30 of Lunar Sea Spire and it’s helped me in my times of boredom. also, you can think: Hoppy has a Y like in amethyst, and since Deedee Magno (Voice of pearl) was the voice actress of hopper, you can say there’s an R like in pearl! much easier than hopper – R as in red – hopper wears pink which is a shade of pink dont you guys think?
